Why I Chose The New Year's Resolutions That I Did

Updated: Jan 18, 2023

As most of us know, making New Year's Resolutions is the easy part, it's sticking to them and actually making them happen that the majority of us seem to struggle with.

I think the mistake that a lot of us make is stating what we want to change or improve on or what we want to do, but we tend to neglect to actually make a plan as to how we intend to make these changes happen, not to mention why we want to do these things or make these changes in the first place.

It's just about impossible to stick to a goal if you don't know how or why you've set yourself that goal in the first place. A goal without a plan or a reason is just a dream.

If you read my last post (New Year's Resolutions), you might remember that my goals for 2023 are to:

1. Consume more fresh, healthy produce, mainly focusing on wholefoods such as fruit, veg and wholegrains, while consuming less processed, fatty, greasy foods and excess animal products.

2. Cut down on added sugar and excess sodium and replace flavoured milk and coffee in favour of drinking more water and herbal teas.

3. Get more exercise and spend less time sitting around.

4. Go to bed on time in order to get a good enough quality and quantity of sleep.

5. Continue reading and learning about self-care, but instead of just reading and learning about improving my diet, lifestyle, and mindset so that I can be the best version of myself that I can be, I would like to actually start putting these things into practice.

Knowing what my goals are is the first step to achieving them, but if I were to simply leave it there, I can already tell you what would happen (because I've lived it before!).

I'll start the first week of my new year off quite well, then slowly I will find that I feel a bit lost and suddenly my new goals will seem overwhelming because I don't really know how to make them happen, then I'll slowly slip back into my old habits because they're familiar and comfortable and easy!

So, that being said, I intend to do things a little differently this time. To make it a little easier to stick with my goals for 2023, now that I've identified what my goals are, I need to list the reasons why I want to make these changes to make them easier to stick to. So, let's start:

1. I'd like to eat more fresh, healthy produce because: I want to feel better and look better. It's true that you are what you eat, so I want to feel healthy, happy, light and energetic. Heavy, processed, hard to digest foods are NOT the way to make this happen!

2. I'd like to cut down on added sugar and excess sodium and replace flavoured milk and coffee with water and herbal teas for the same reasons listed above. I find that my current morning routine involves drinking way more coffee than I should, which makes me feel thirsty and jittery. I want my body to feel well-hydrated, light and energetic and I want to feel the difference of having everything flow properly.

3. I'd like to get more exercise and spend less time sitting around because I want my body to feel good. I want to have more energy and I'd like my body to feel strong, flexible and in top-working condition instead of aching, tired, and sluggish.

4. I'd like to go to bed on time in order to get a good enough quality and quantity of sleep because I want to feel well-rested, happy and energetic. I also want to be one of those people who get out of bed in the morning with zest instead of hitting snooze 20 times and pulling the blanket over my head trying to hide from the day because I'm too tired to face it.

5. I want to continue reading and learning about self-care because I want to be able to implement the changes I want to make in my life and actually feel like I know what I'm doing in order to be able to take the best care of myself that I possibly can.

How about you, did you make any New Year's Resolutions for 2023? If so, what were they and why did you choose the resolutions that you did?

If you're not really sure why you chose the NYRs that you did, maybe take a minute to write them down - it may make sticking to them a little bit easier. Would love to know how you go!

Keep an eye out for my next post where I'll go over how I intend to stick with my New Year's Resolutions for 2023! 🙂
