New Year's Resolutions

Updated: Jan 18, 2023

So, that time has come around again (where did the time go!?) where one year ends and another begins and we make a promise to ourselves to be better than we were last year.

I feel as though I make many of the same New Year's Resolutions each year and although I tend to start off well, by the end of the year I find that I haven't really stuck with things quite as much as I'd hoped to. Do I find this discouraging at all? Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

Because I realise periodically that I've slowly slipped back into old habits that don't serve me well and haven't stuck with my new, healthy habits, does that mean I should simply give up and stop trying? Certainly not!

Developing new, healthy habits is kind of like quitting smoking - it often takes multiple attempts before you're actually able to stick with it.

You may try and fail, but each time you try again, you seem to get better and better at it and stick with it for longer than you did the last time. At least that's the way I find it works for me.

During the Christmas holidays (and even including the few weeks prior to Christmas), my diet was terrible! I’d been skipping breakfast, drinking way too many coffees, indulging in ice cream almost every day, and continuing to eat past the point of bursting (I don’t do anything by halves!).

That's the beauty of ringing in a new year. If you're lucky enough to have time off work over Christmas, the break in your normal daily routine could be just what you need to be able to start a fresh new one once work starts back up again.

My New Year's Resolutions for 2023 are much like the NYRs that most of us make year after year:

  • I'd like to consume more fresh, healthy produce, mainly focusing on wholefoods such as fruit, veg and wholegrains, while consuming less processed, fatty, greasy foods and excess animal products.

  • I’d also like to cut down on added sugar and excess sodium and replace flavoured milk and coffee in favour of drinking more water and herbal teas.

  • I’d like to get more exercise and spend less time sitting around.

  • I'd like to go to bed on time in order to get a good enough quality and quantity of sleep.

  • I would like to continue reading and learning about self-care, but instead of just reading and learning about improving my diet, lifestyle, and mindset so that I can be the best version of myself that I can be, I would like to actually start putting these things into practice.

Wish me luck! I’ll keep you updated and let you know how I go! Keep an eye out for my next post outlining my "whys" and "how" I intend to stick with it this time. 🙂

What about you, do you have any New Year's Resolutions for 2023?

Do you usually stick with your New Year's Resolutions, or do you find it hard to follow through with the things that you set out to do?

Or maybe you have some tips and tricks that the rest of us can use to keep motivated with our NYRs?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! 😊

Happy to have you here and I hope you have a great day/ night!
