Learning From Scratch

Updated: Jan 18, 2023

So, as you may know from a couple of my previous blog posts, one of my main goals in life is to live a more holistic lifestyle.

It's funny how we start off in one direction that we think will lead us on the way to our ultimate destination, and while we often think that there is one direct path to get there, it's not until we start our journey that we discover all the little alleyways and side trips along the way.

My life's journey in my mind was one where I simply lived a healthy lifestyle that included getting enough sleep, water and exercise, and eating lots of healthy wholefoods but lately, my journey has become so much more than that.

As I get older and my life progresses, I find myself becoming more and more interested in topics such as homesteading and self-sufficiency as well.

So many aspects of homesteading and self-sufficiency seem to be in alignment with the holistic, healthy lifestyle that I would like to create for myself.

Things such as growing, harvesting and cooking with your own fresh, organic produce, creating your own herbal remedies and natural beauty and cleaning products, and generally just living closer to the way that nature intended for us to live.

Part of the life that I would like to create for myself now includes much more than just eating more fruit and vegetables and getting an adequate amount of water, sleep, and exercise, but now also includes things such as doing more for myself instead of simply running off to the store to buy the things I need, or relying on others to do things for me.

I now want to learn things such as:

  • Growing my own organic produce

  • Foraging my garden and neighbourhood for wild edibles

  • Cooking my own baked goods from scratch

  • Making my own dairy products

  • Creating and using herbal remedies as opposed to racing to the supermarket to pop a pill for an ill

  • Making beauty and cleaning products using natural ingredients instead of the chemical-laden products surrounding and so readily available to us

  • Crafts such as knitting, sewing, candle making etc.

  • Building my own carpentry projects

  • Preserving my own food and learning how to use it all so that nothing goes to waste

  • Finding alternative uses for things instead of throwing them out, and using what I have instead of buying things brand new

Eventually, I'd also love to delve right into all things homesteading and self-sufficiency such as animal husbandry and caring for livestock, beekeeping, spinning wool - all sorts of things!

I'm in a place in my life right now where I just want to learn everything I possibly can. I've been reading up on all this kind of stuff for a while now, so I think it's time to stop dreaming and finally start doing.

Wish me luck! 🙂 xx

How about you? Do any aspects of the homesteading and/ or self-sufficiency lifestyle appeal to you? If so, which aspects do you find the most appealing?

Are there any aspects of homesteading/ self-sufficiency that you currently participate in, such as cooking your own baked goods from scratch or making your own natural cleaning products?

I'd love to hear your stories!

Happy to have you here and I hope you have a great day/ night!

I love breadmaking and I recently just bought 2 new baby goats, Marlie and Gino. I love them. I hope they have babies when they get older so that Marlie will provide us with milk.
